Switching to Green Cleaning: Natural All Purpose Cleaning Spray

When I started learning about natural living and green cleaning I was so overwhelmed by the recommendations and ideas online. I also didn’t have the financial means to experiment endlessly, so I ended up spending hours researching and experimenting to figure out how to make the switch from toxic products to more natural alternatives.

The only way I’ve found this will work is to see it as a journey, tackling one product at a time. The best product to start with in my opinion is a good all-purpose spray, which is why I’m happy you’ve found this page!

I’ve come to realize that green cleaning is just as effective as traditional cleaning and makes my home a much more healthy and happy environment to live in. I hope you’ll enjoy!

What is Green Cleaning?

Simply put, green cleaning means using cleaning products and practices that are safe for us, our loved ones, and our planet.

The easiest way to determine which products are safe to use is to access resources provided by consumer watchdog groups like the Environmental Working Group. I aim to only use ingredients and products that have an A or B rating.

If you haven’t yet, read my Beginners Guide to Green Cleaning, where I explain everything you need to know about green cleaning.

Green Cleaning Effectively

Using effective green cleaning tools in combination with eco-friendly and effective cleaners will ensure a squeaky clean home in no time! Below you’ll find my favorite store-bought all-purpose cleaners and homemade green cleaners.

Making your own cleaners can be the greenest option because you can control the ingredients. This way you can ensure they are safe and eco-friendly, while also being cost-effective and time-efficient!

But most green cleaners fail because they use the wrong ingredients for the task or the wrong combinations.

Some mixtures combine ingredients that neutralize their cleaning effect while others create chemicals reactions that make an even bigger mess or become dangerous.

To Green Clean Effectively You Need To Know:

  • Which eco-friendly cleaning tools will make your life easier
  • Which ingredients are safe and eco-friendly
  • How to use natural cleaning ingredients
  • Which ingredient combinations to NEVER mix
  • Which cleaning combinations are effective for certain tasks

Natural Homemade All Purpose Cleaning Spray Ingredients

These are my favorite natural ingredients to make an effective all purpose cleaning spray.

White Vinegar

Although the smell can be pungent at first, natural white vinegar is a staple in a green and natural home’s cleaning toolkit.

Use for: Disinfecting, eliminating odors, and removing dirt, stains, mold, and mildew.

Ingredient Caution: Vinegar can’t be used on every surface (like marble and granite). It should also never be combined with baking soda, castile soap or hydrogen peroxide.

Sal Suds

Sal Suds is not a soap but a concentrated all-purpose detergent that is more effective than regular soap. It’s an absolute must-have and super cost-effective!

Use for: Removing stubborn grease, dirt, and tough stains.

Ingredient Caution: You only need to use a drop or two, unless you like spending overtime cleaning suds! This ingredient is a little controversial in the natural community but it gets a top rating on EWG

Castile Soap

Unscented Castile Soap is a concentrated vegetable-based soap that is great at cleaning and gentle on the skin. Bars and liquid are amazing for different uses.

Use for: Castile soap is used to clean just about anything: from hands to laundry!

Ingredient Caution: Castile soap should never be combined with vinegar and I would not recommend washing your hair with it.

Glass (Spray) Bottles

You’ll need a few glass spray bottles to DIY a few effective cleaners. Although this picture doesn’t do them justice, in addition to being durable and eco-friendly, these from Kuishi are gorgeous too!

I also own a few dispenser bottles that I use for my homemade foaming hand soap and natural body wash. Storage bottles or mason jars are super convenient for safekeeping dry products like natural carpet deodorizer or even natural dry shampoo.

Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber cloths make cleaning while minimizing the need for harsh chemicals! Use them dry to dust surfaces or remove streaks and grease from stainless steel.

When used wet, together with an all-purpose cleaner or bathroom cleaner, it will make disinfecting and scrubbing quick and easy. They’re also inexpensive, reusable and long-lasting if you refrain from washing them with fabric softener or chlorine bleach.

Essential Oils

Pure essential oils are the best secret weapon in green cleaning with antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, degreasing and deodorizing properties.

Use for: natural fragrance, killing microbes, cleaning surfaces, sticky spots, and more. My favorites for cleaning are lavender, melaleuca (tea tree), lemon, oregano, and clove, amongst others.

Ingredient Caution: Fragrance oils are not the same as essential oils, and are often synthetic, unsustainably made and carry all sorts of additives. In case you’re curious, I have chosen to use this brand.

Natural All Purpose Cleaning Spray Recipes

Natural All Purpose Spray

with Sal Suds

This is my absolute favorite all purpose spray because it combines the power of detergent (removing dirt and grease) and vinegar (removing odors and disinfecting).

In a 500mL glass spray bottle add:

  • Distilled water (200mL)
  • White Vinegar (200mL)
  • Sal Suds (1/2tsp)
  • Essential Oils (20-30 drops)

Close the bottle and shake between uses. Spray and wipe down with a microfiber cleaning cloth. I love using lavender, lemon, orange, clove bud and peppermint in my all-purpose cleaning sprays.

Natural All Purpose Spray

with Castile Soap

If for whatever reason you don’t want to use Sal Suds or Vinegar (because of sensitive surfaces for example), this is another personal favorite cleaning spray of mine.

In a 500mL glass spray bottle add:

  • Distilled water (400mL)
  • White Vinegar (65mL)
  • Essential Oils (20-30 drops)

Close the bottle and shake between uses. Spray and wipe down with a microfiber cleaning cloth. I love using lavender, lemon, orange, clove bud and peppermint in my all-purpose cleaning sprays.

Natural Store-Bought All Purpose Cleaning Spray

If you really aren’t into making your own homemade concoctions, I got you!

Attitude

Made with plant- and mineral-based ingredients, Attitude’s All Purpose Cleaner is a worry-free way to get the surfaces in your home squeaky clean. It contains no harmful chemicals, is safe for surfaces, kids, pets and everything else you love!

Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation has an all purpose spray that is a powerful, biodegradable and plant-based household cleaner. I like these because in addition to being highly effective for cutting grease, grime and dirt, their bottles are made from recycled plastic, they carry no fragrances and are safe to use around kids and pets.

It is also super simple to use as you don’t have to rinse. Simply spray and wipe!

Earth Friendly Products ECOS

The All Purpose Cleaner spray by ECOS is a versatile plant powered surface cleaner for everyday use on all kitchen and hard surface areas. It comes in different fragrances but I happen to like the Parsley Plus or the Fragrance-free the best. They are formulated as an effective stone counter-top cleaner and is safe on sealed stone like granite and marble. They are also vegan and cruelty free!
